I’ve written this basic guide as an introduction to the different levels of value so that users of appraisal services will be able to better determine what sort of appraisal reports would best suit their needs. Fair Market Value is also frequently encountered in equitable distribution and family distribution appraisal reports.

Some appraisers charge a flat fee, while others may have an hourly rate or charge a percentage of the appraised value. You must request a detailed quote outlining the services included and any additional charges for extra services, such as consultation fees or extra copies of the appraisal report.

Isn’t it a great world we live in, where all the knowledge of the Ages… all of it… is right there at end of your fingertips? Having a legal and professional Appraisal Report is required if you are submitting the information to the IRS, or if the report will be viewed by an attorney or judge. First off, I applaud you.

At the end of the appointment, the appraiser will provide you with an estimated time frame for when the appraisal report will be completed. Most appraisers can provide an appraisal report in one to five days. Once the report is completed, you will receive a copy via mail or email.

Your appraiser will also use knowledge of recent sales of comparable works to determine the artwork’s value. You will be provided with a comprehensive report including a description of the work, the valuation method used and the final appraised value. Understanding the historical context of the artwork is crucial.

Being able to see photographs emailed to me ahead of time by a client can reduce the client’s total project cost, alert me of the need to consult specialized reference books or outside experts, and help me assess whether the client even needs an appraisal report at all. Note the thickness of hollowware. Do you see kiln marks?
