Complicated pocket watches tend to be more expensive, given their rarity, however an easier and relatively inexpensive entry point for new collectors could be aiming to buy pieces in excellent condition, by lesser known makers.

Silverplate is often thicker and heavier than sterling Age Style (for example, Nouveau is valuable, Rococo Revival less so) Famous makers (such as Tiffany) or retailed from a famous shop (for example Liberty or Cartier) Weight in troy ounces (this is different from regular ounces. Note the thickness of hollowware. Do you see kiln marks?

A framed etching of Mr Nathaniel Hillier, 9.5cm wide I’ve collected prints, from etchings to engravings and woodcuts to lithographs, since I was a schoolboy. The back was covered with aged and glue-stained pasted paper, with a roughly cut label reading ‘ Mr Nathaniel Hillier ‘ Who was he?
