A Note from the Co-Editor: As an appraiser, I frequently invite new clients to send me pictures of their items so I can review them in advance and better assist with designing an appraisal scope of work that is most appropriate to their needs. There are some objects that are not well-suited for evaluating through photographs.

Replacement cost comparable is the cost necessary to replace an item of personal property with an equivalent item having similar appearance, quality, condition, age, authorship, and utility within a reasonable amount of time in the relevant marketplace. Note that the definition of replacement cost comparable mentions age.

Examples of retail replacement value are the price an art gallery asks for a painting in their inventory, the asking price of a table by a furniture designer, or the manufacturer listed price of a sterling silver serving item. The next level down of value is Actual Cash Value.

Over the years, I have spent a lot of time on the phone trying to help people determine if the painting they found in a garage sale is worth anything.
