It may require research, as when faced with unknown maker's marks on the bottom of a piece of pottery. Also, it can sometimes uncover particularly interesting details about the item's provenance.

Appraisals can also assist in establishing provenance, which can significantly impact the value of the artwork. Some insurance companies include a blanket amount for artwork, and some require an independent appraisal (not done by the gallery or artist that sold you the art) for all items over $1200, $2500, or $5000.

Being able to see photographs emailed to me ahead of time by a client can reduce the client’s total project cost, alert me of the need to consult specialized reference books or outside experts, and help me assess whether the client even needs an appraisal report at all. Note the thickness of hollowware. Do you see kiln marks?

Many Art Appraisers also work as Art Advisors it is a natural and likely channel for collectors as Art Appraisers are independent of a Gallery or Artist and really do work on behalf of their clients, and do not and should not have a stake in whether a client buys art or the level of value the art is.
