Old Mine Cut diamonds were first cut in the 1700’s and they were popular prior to the Old European Cut diamonds. They are known for their squarish to rectangular outline when they were well cut, similar to a Cushion Cut. However, many of these diamonds were not well cut and today they are known as “lumpy Old Miners.” This 18k yellow gold pin is circa 1840 and it contains these lumpy diamonds.

I received a lot of comments from museum directors and curators on last month’s blog , agreeing with me that changing social mores have caused a re-evaluation of what gets presented in museums today. The art market follows this trend: paintings depicting Native Americans as ignorant, bloodthirsty savages are much harder to sell than they were 30 years ago, and their fair market value has consequently decreased.

When I was a student at the GIA we were taught about all of the different diamond cuts, and the Old European Cut was one of the more interesting. This diamond shape is known for its round outline, high crown, open culet and wavy girdle. This diamond shape came about after the invention of the motor which allowed diamond to be spun at a high speed while another diamond was held gently next to it.
